Connecting with the Community
Given extra resources as a result of Arts College status we are now able to offer more courses and learning experiences to more children.

We are using our ever growing links with partner arts and community organisations to enhance the range of our art activities in school hours and in extra curricular and community work. Our family of schools extends now to 6 primary and 3 secondary schools in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

LONDON BOROUGH OF TOWER HAMLETS

Currently we are working with a number of partner organisations.

  • The Building Experience Trust
Working with Year 8 and Year 10 on environmental projects.

  • Whitechapel Gallery
Working with DSB students on a colour project. Year 10 Photography project.

  • National Portrait Gallery
Photography project for Year 10 GCSE Art & Photography course.

  • National Gallery
Joint summer and Christmas vacation project for KS2 and KS3 students.

  • Sir John Cass School of Art
Easter vacation workshops for Year 10 students. Arts College status has really enabled us to make these strong and effective links and our growing reputation in the locality certainly draws new enquiries from various other sources almost weekly.

  • The Bow Arts Trust
Our main partner arts organisation. At the outset we felt that to be successful in bringing artists into SPW and our family of schools a real two way partnership was needed between the School and a single arts organisation. The decision to make a close partnership with Bow Arts has turned out to be the right choice. Over past two years we have developed a sound working relationship. We employ artists and designers from Bow Arts for a variety of roles which support the delivery of the Arts College development plan.

The Future
Over the past two years we feel that our contacts with our partner arts organisations have flourished but in the next three years we hope to; expand the network of contacts particularly those who work in the community, with the disadvantaged, disabled and the elderly. We want to involve ourselves in encouraging small enterprise schemes and art therapy and to work more with the Bromley by Bow Centre (which houses an art centre and GPs surgeries) to offer opportunities for these groups to use the art dept at SPW during the day.

Participation in major local regeneration schemes
With the SRB6 bid for regeneration of the Poplar area of LBTH we will use and expand initiatives like arts week to raise the profile of the Arts as a worthwhile life enhancing activity.
