MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT
BENGALI

What We Teach:
Bengali is taught as a Modern Foreign Language at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. The course is designed to help students gain the knowledge and skills of Bengali language and develop cultural awareness of the Bengali speaking communities and countries.

Five Areas of Experience – (a) Everyday Activities, (b) Personal and Social Life, (c) The World Around Us, (d) The World of Work and (e) The International World – are used as the learning context for children to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Bengali. Children are also taught to use Bengali word processing and desktop publishing programs.

As part of the course, children also learn using Bengali scripts and numerals in other applications including database, spreadsheet and online communications through e-mail and Internet. The department expects to facilitate more effective and exciting communication in standard Bengali through video-conferencing among children within and beyond school.

students can choose Bengali as a Modern Foreign Language option in Year 8. No prior knowledge of Bengali is required to take the course at this stage. Those who choose Bengali in Year 8 are taught to be prepared for the GCSE examination at the end of Year 11. Some students are encouraged to take the GCSE exam early at the end of Year 9. St. Paul's Way students have achieved brilliant results in Bengali which are regarded as "a strength of the School" (OFSTED report, 2000).
