About
the Department:
The Drama Department has the benefit of specialist facilities boasting two drama studios and a fully equipped theatre.
All students in Year 7, 8 and 9 have Drama for one hour a week and in Years 10 and 11 there is the option of taking the Edexcel GCSE Drama syllabus which involves five hours every fortnight and is a course that is very popular and successful with senior students.
students have the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular plays and performances and the School arranges trips to theatres, particularly our local professional theatre, The Theatre Royal, Stratford East and Theatre in Education companies frequently visit the School.
St. Paul's Way Community School believes that students must be given every opportunity to also show their talents outside the classroom. The
drama syllabus allows our students to express themselves, perform and excel and is vital to an all round good and successful education.
Recent Productions:
Over recent years, the Drama Department has produced a number of large and
small scale productions. We believe that the experience of producing
'theatre' on this scale is invaluable in the development of the
social/personal skills of our students. We also feel that it heightens the
profile of the subject amongst the students so that drama ceases to be
seen as a 'soft' option. Productions also provide excellent developmental
opportunities for all students, but particularly for those who are
talented in this area.
-
'GREASE'
In March of 2003, the department, in conjunction with the other arts
departments produced 'GREASE'. The production was a huge success and
received rave reviews in the local press. It was performed to the school
as well as to a number of special schools from the local area. Below are
some photographs from the production.
-
'BUGSY
MALONE'
Following up the smash success of 'GREASE', we undertook to produce 'BUGSY
MALONE' in May of 2004. Once again, this was a runaway success and was
praised for its sense of fun. The skill of the young performers was highly
impressive as the quality of the singing and dancing was a sight and sound
to behold. Below are some photographs from the production.
-
'THE
TAMING OF THE SHREW'
In October of 2004, the department and some of our Yr 11 students took
part in the Schools Shakespeare Festival. Our production of 'The Taming
of the Shrew' was excellent with the skill and comic timing of the young
performers highly praised. This production was staged at the Cochrane
Theatre in Holborn, Central London.

Important Note about our Schemes of Work:
A number of our schemes of work take as the starting point an
excellent book called Developing Drama Skills 11-14 by Joss Benathon. Thus many of the resources we use as a starting point
for our drama work
can be found by purchasing this excellent and inspirational book.
