ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

Department Information:
EAL is funded by the DfES and aims at providing equality of educational opportunity to all minority ethnic groups. It is intended to meet the particular needs of students for whom English is an additional language and to raise standards of achievement for those minority ethnic groups at risk of underachievement. The Casual Entry and New Arrivals project is also run by the department. These projects help to develop the language and literacy skills of all bilingual students, raise students’ and parents’ awareness of the importance of education and integrate new arrivals into school life. The ultimate aim is to help bilingual students gain full access to the National Curriculum. The majority of EAL staff are bilingual and/or trained in the teaching of English as an Additional Language. A305 is the department’s base room.

EAL Assessment Scales:
EAL assessment scales relate to four levels of English language acquisition, each of which has its own descriptions of achievement in listening, speaking, reading and writing. A Step 1 bilingual learner is beginning to understand and converse in basic English. At Step 2, s/he can begin to associate sounds with letters. At Level 1 (Threshold) s/he is able to read and understand simple texts and produce some simple written English. At Level 1 (Secure), s/he is beginning to develop a range of English language skills including reading. Further achievement then leads to national curriculum attainment target level 2.

EAL Curriculum Support Option (KS4):
The EAL Curriculum Support Option is offered to students who have recently arrived in the United Kingdom and/or are learning the English language.

The EAL Department works closely with the main subject departments to make sure that all students gain the best results they can at Key Stage 4. One, and sometimes two, teachers will give you timetabled lessons to improve your skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English.

Everyone is awarded an Entry Level English qualification from the Edexcel exam board plus there are lots of opportunities for students to get help with coursework in other subjects.

All lessons take place in room A305 where there is a wide range of multi-media resources for developing English language skills.
