FIRST BASE

About the Department:
First Base (Learning Support Unit) is situated in the School House.

First Base works with students who have a range of different needs:

• Students returning from a long absence

• Students returning from serious truancy; they work full-time with us before returning gradually to mainstream

• Students who disrupt lessons rendering them impossible to deliver effectively; they follow the curriculum in First Base for a specified period of time; these students are referred through the school’s Inclusion Panel

• Students who cause trouble both in and outside the classroom may spend a full-time period in First Base in an effort to improve their attitude and behaviour

• Students who are excluded by the Headteacher for a fixed period are ‘internally excluded’ to First Base where they follow their curriculum and may discuss the behaviour which led to the exclusion

• Students coming from a PRU who have been permanently excluded from another school, initially work in First Base before joining mainstream

• Students who are injured or pregnant may work in First Base due to mobility problems

It is hoped that all students referred to First Base benefit from our inclusion policy and are able to return to enjoy a successful mainstream school career.
