What
is Food Technology?
Students learn about hygiene and safety, nutrition, healthy eating, and the
correct use of tools and equipment. They are taught how to prepare and try
out their ideas in food product design lessons. The department is based in
Room A307, which was refurbished in the summer of 2002 and offers
excellent facilities for students.
How
do students progress in Food Technology?
At Key Stage 3, Food Technology is taught on a carousel basis with other
technology subjects, with all students studying each subject for one year
out of the three. students may therefore find themselves being timetabled
for Food Technology in either Year 7, 8 or 9. At the end of Year 9, the
students choose their options for Key Stage 4, when they have the
opportunity to choose GCSE Food Technology. This qualification could lead
on to further training in the hotel, catering or food industry. Visits to
local restaurants, markets and food suppliers or food establishments are
made whenever possible, to encourage understanding of food in the locality
and to establish positive community links.
How
much cooking is there in Food Technology?
Two out of three lessons (which are one hour each) are practical. It
is important that students learn how to manage their resources responsibly
and with good results. The school provides ingredients which the students
share and cooking is organised as a team effort. Key Stage 4 coursework
provides the opportunity for more individual work.

there any written work in Food Technology?
Each student keeps a file of their classwork and homework. They learn
about hygiene, safety, nutrition, healthy eating, tools and equipment,

file to record their planning, ideas, evaluations and progress overall.

Students enjoy Food Technology because they can see if they are
managing their resources well and can taste their good results. Classwork
and homework is marked regularly to monitor effort and
achievement. students complete a baseline assessment at the start of the
year and National Curriculum Levels of Attainment are awarded at the end
of the year.
