GEOGRAPHY
DEPARTMENT

Curriculum Information:
Year 7:
One hour per week. Topics include map skills, settlement, Japan and Italy. Assessment is mostly through tests and group presentations.

Year 8: Three hours per fortnight. Topics include: volcanoes and earthquakes, river geomorphology, flooding, Kenya and Egypt. Assessment is performed by short written tests, portfolios of work, group presentation, newspaper articles.

Year 9: Three hours per fortnight. Topics include: population and resources (Malthus and Boerup, and the video: Sex, Lemurs and Holes in the Sky), ecosystems (tropical rainforests, deforestation and rainforest management linked with sustainable development and global citizenship), tourism and leisure.

Year 10 + 11: We follow the Avery Hill WJEC Geography syllabus: 1579.

Year 11 Coursework:
Cross-Unit Task title: "Should all countries become "rich" (more economically developed), and if so, what will happen to the planet Earth? That is, if everyone in China owned a car, instead of a bicycle, would the resultant pollution suffocate the planet Earth?"

Year 11 Course Study: 
An investigation of the quality of residential environments improves with increasing distance from the CBD. Looking at the geographical urban land-use models of Hoyt, Burgess and Harris and Ullman, as well as Alonso's Bid-rent theory.

Exam topics covered in Year 10 and 11 are:

  • Water, Landforms and People. Case Studies: Bangladesh, Mississippi and Limpopo.

  • Work and Employment. Case Studies: London's Docklands and Kenya. 

  • People and Place. Case Studies: London's Docklands, New York, Dhaka, Tanfield Lea, Amazonia rainforest, Hickling Broad (Norfolk). 

  • Natural Environments. Case Studies: tropical rainforests, Madagascar, Virgin Islands (Caribbean), savanna areas (Kenya), Antarctica, Hammerfest.

Residential Field Trips: 
KS3 trip to Blen Cathra, Lake District.
Year 11 to Overstrand, Norfolk.
Other trips to Tyn-y-Berth, Corris Uchaf and Rheidol, both in Wales.

Specific Achievements: 
The school's Geography department was recently mentioned in the London Schools Guide 2002, as being a strong GCSE subject, with "Geography GCSE results were 5% above the national average."

Out of School Hours Learning classes for Geography are often conducted on Saturday mornings, and during the Autumn half-term, Spring half-term and Easter Holidays.
