About
the Department:
History is a small department in the School situated in three
Second Floor rooms in 'A' Block. We also have a resource base and the use
of a Humanities staffroom. The staff teach mixed ability classes across
the age range. We are working to raise the status of the department and
increase group sizes at 'options' stage.
The Nature of the Subject:
The teaching of History in secondary schools has changed considerably in
recent years and it is the intention of the department to reflect these
changes. This is an active subject in which students are encouraged to
participate in the types of work undertaken by professional historians,
through 'hands-on' experience of a wide variety of historical sources.
They are asked to evaluate these sources or to use them to explain events
and developments.
As a subject primarily concerned with the actions, aspirations and
motivation of human beings, history is ideally suited to encourage an
atmosphere of mutual respect and to encourage enquiry and analysis.
The Aims of the Department:
1. To support the aims of the School by improving the quality of the
learning experience of all our students and raising achievement through
the use of challenging activities, appropriate materials and the creation
of an attractive learning environment.
2. To assist in the development of basic communication skills (oral and
written), through the provision of appropriate stimuli and the use of
I.C.T.
3. To develop historical skills.
4. To develop teaching strategies which encourage group co-operation and
mutual respect within the classroom and which allows each student to achieve
her/his full potential.
5. To engender an interest in and enthusiasm for the study of history that
will extend beyond the classroom.
6. To encourage students to recognise the values and achievements of
different societies in the past and present.
7. To encourage students to appreciate the value of historical skills /
attitudes within their everyday lives.
INSET:
The department plans to use in-service training in the following areas in
the following areas in line with the Department Plan.
1. Raising attainment at KS3. Implementation of the FS strategies,
teaching and learning - using data, assessment for learning.
2. GCSE the requirements of syllabus A. Targeting D and E grades.
History and the Arts College:
The school's Arts College Status has enabled the department to acquire
resources to develop the Interpretations key element in Key Stage 3 as a
preparation for the new Key Stage 4 course. Visual sources of evidence are
given a high priority when the department plans new resources, for example
colour copies of paintings or the use of film extracts. Artists in
residence have worked with history students in Year 10 to produce
paintings which demonstrate different interpretations of historical
figures. Artists have also worked with Year 7 students looking at textiles,
clothes and status in
medieval society. The department intends to continue this work with the
Art department during 'Arts Weeks'.
