THE
ICT
DEPARTMENT

Aims of the Department:
The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) department at St. Paul's Way Community School aims to provide the students who come here with the opportunity to develop the computer skills and knowledge that will help them to survive and cope in the world today, where communications technology is constantly developing and changing. They learn that this form of technology can be stimulating, varied and a lot of fun.

They are given the opportunity to learn how to use and apply different generic software and are made aware of the changes and developments in hardware. They learn how work and learning can be made easier and more refined and how to access knowledge without boundaries. They also learn to discriminate in their choice of sources of information and areas of access and of the responsibility that comes with handling and holding information and its legal implications.

They are made aware of how this technology is used in society and in the home and of standards of good practice and security of information.

What We Teach:
The students follow a syllabus developed in keeping with the National Curriculum for Key Stage 3. The technology is applied. The themes are set for each Year and build up to and form the foundation for examination courses at Key Stage 4.

At present, our department offers the DIDA for Key Stage 4 students. DiDA is the Diploma in Digital Applications, a revolutionary suite of three paperless qualifications from Edexcel that focuses on the practical application of technology. As a suite of qualifications, DiDA offers progression from the Award (AiDA), which is equivalent to one GCSE, to the Certificate (CiDA), and on to the full Diploma (DiDA), equivalent to four GCSEs. This is delivered over 2 years.

The suite of DiDA qualifications is designed to:

  • develop students’ ability to select and use digital applications appropriately and produce high quality outcomes;
  • promote the use of digital applications for achieving a goal, rather than for their own sake;
  • enhance creativity and communication;
  • equip students with some of the skills that they will need in the workplace or in further education or training;
  • develop project management skills;
  • free students’ work from paper, making it organised, searchable, dynamic and transportable; and
  • encourage students to reflect critically on their own and others’ use of digital applications.

The examination we offer at KS4 may develop and change according to changes in the subject and developments in the courses offered by the examination boards.

Our Approach:
At KS3, the students do both group and individualised work. Discussion and mutual help is encouraged. students are encouraged to be leaders and work in a democratic manner. Literacy and numeracy are built into the schemes of work as are extension work for the gifted and basic work for those who need a slower pace.

At KS4, students are encouraged to work independently, both in planning, preparation and presentation of work. They have to justify plans and choices in all aspects of their work. They have to provide and identify proof for all the assessment criteria of the portfolios. Standards are set high and students are encouraged to attain them.

The Premises and Staff:
We have a suite of three specialist computing rooms all within close communicating distance, so staff can be available to help and advise one another if the need arises. Departmental staff work together closely in delivery, assessment and matters of discipline and reward.

Staffing:
Shafiq Rahman - Head of Department
Mhd. Ruhul Chowdhury
Damien Tudjman

All the staff are very experienced and well qualified. They are also very committed to the welfare of the School and the progress of the students and the subject.
