CITIZENSHIP
and PSHE

What We Teach:
Citizenship and PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) is taught in discreet lessons, with a lesson every week for Year 8, 10 and 11 and a lesson every two weeks for Year 7 and 9.

The course is designed to cover the five cross-curricular themes identified in the National Curriculum. Self-assessment, group discussion work and active participation in projects are an important part of the Citizenship and PSHE curriculum and helps to raise motivation and promote learning.

At Key Stage 4 all students follow the GCSE Edexcel Short-Course in Citizenship Studies, which is 60% exam and 40% coursework. The coursework consists of a written piece of work following an active citizenship project.

Topics studied at Key Stage 3 include:
Year 7: Rules and Fairness, Children’s and Human Rights, Local Government, Friendship, Bullying, Puberty and an Active Citizenship Project.

Year 8: Crime & Young People, Media, Refugees and Immigration, Different Types of Government, Central Government and Services, Relationships, and an Active Citizenship Project.

Year 9: Global Citizenship, 14-16 Progression, EU, UN, Commonwealth, Community Organisations, Alcohol, Smoking, Drugs and You and Your Opinions.

Through their studies, students are expected to gain:
• knowledge and understanding about becoming informed citizens,
• developing skills of inquiry and communication,
• knowledge of participation and responsible action.
