About
the Department:
We follow the Tower Hamlets Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. There is one lesson a week for all years. Lessons are one hour
each on Mondays-Thursdays and 50 minutes each on Fridays.
KS3: Each unit is taught over one half-term and should last between 6-7 weeks. Some cross over occurs when half-term is longer or shorter.
The Year 7 course considers some to the Beliefs and Sources of Authority for religiously committed
people.
The main religions studied will be CHRISTIANITY, ISLAM and HINDUISM. The course is divided into FIVE main parts:

Learning About and Learning From
Religion (0.5 units);

Beliefs and Authority in
Christianity (1.5 units);
-
A Project on Beliefs and Authority in Buddhism, Judaism or
Sikhism (1 unit);
-
Beliefs and Authority in
Hinduism (1 unit);
-
Beliefs and Authority in
Islam (1 unit).
The
Year 8 course considers what it means to belong to a religion. We will focus on the practices and community activities involved for a religiously committed person.
The main religions studied will be CHRISTIANITY, ISLAM and HINDUISM.
The course is divided into FOUR main parts:

Belonging to
Hinduism (1 unit);

Belonging to
Islam (2 units);

Belonging to
Christianity (2 units);
-
A Project on Practices and Lifestyles in Buddhism, Judaism or
Sikhism (1 unit).
The
Year 9 course considers Shared Values from the point of view of the religiously
committed.
The main religions studied will be CHRISTIANITY, ISLAM and HINDUISM.
The course is divided into THREE main parts, with an introduction to KS4 studies at the end.

A Project on Shared Values in Buddhism, Judaism or
Sikhism (1 unit);

Faith in Action - Helping Each Other and Protecting the
Environment (1 units);

Introduction to the GCSE course (see below)
Again topics are taught in
half-term units (with some cross-over).

The Existence of God
The nature of God
How God may be known
Part B: Thinking About Morality Ways of making moral decisions. (Taught at the end of Year 9)
Issues of life and death (Euthanasia / Capital Punishment)
Relationships (Sex, Marriage and Divorce / Prejudice and Discrimination)
Global issues (Wealth and Poverty / War and Peace)
