THE
TEXTILES
DEPARTMENT

About the Department
The Textiles Department is located on the third floor in two big studios. These rooms are equipped for pupils to learn about the many diverse areas of textiles design and construction. All students have the opportunity to explore and develop individual skills in screen and lino printing, batik, felt making, machine and hand sewing, applique and 3D textile work. The department is closely linked to Art and has enjoyed a rich cross-curricular link for many years.

Pupil Progression
Pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 are taught Textiles on a carousel within the Technology curriculum, visiting a different subject area each year. This gives our students an informed choice for GCSE option time at the end of Year 9. Textiles students in Years 10 and 11 study an Art and Design Textiles GCSE course, using and developing previous skills.

Visits to current exhibitions and places of interest are made to enrich learning and understanding within the subject area. Practicing designers often work within the department across both key stages. The costumiers, Dot's Loft, work annually with Year 10 on a fantasy footwear or head-dress project. This enables students to diversify and also glean some understanding of the breadth a career in textile design can offer. Some students take their exam in Year 10 thus giving the opportunity for further study at AS level. The GCSE is very popular and enjoys outstanding results.

Pupils regularly display their work within the school and in public galleries or urban environments. Last year, in response to a project based on 17th century Japanese botanical drawings a class of Year 8 students staged a very well received exhibition of work at The Brunei Gallery, London University. The project was funded by Poplar Arts Trust.
