Music and Instrumental Lessons

In Years 7 to 9, all students have the chance to sing and to develop keyboard and and basic drumming skills. They also learn how to use Music software on computers to compose music. Students choosing to continue with Music in Years 10 and 11 will work towards a Foundation or Intermediate GNVQ Performing Arts qualification.

Music lessons aim to teach theoretical concepts through practical activities, especially performing and composing. We have several successful bands within the School, who perform regularly. GCSE and GNVQ students are often involved in projects in the community, such as the Spitalfields Festival, and recently projects have been arranged involving visiting performers from the well-known percussion group Ensemble Bash and the Royal Opera House.

There are also opportunities for some students to take extra lessons on piano and keyboard, guitar, drums, tabla and singing (both in Asian and Western styles), and to play or sing in bands in our termly School Concerts. There are many extra-curricular opportunities for students to practice existing skills and develop new ones, which are open to all. Students may also choose to get involved in our major musical theatre productions, either as performers or in a backstage/technical capacity.

St. Paul’s Way Community School believes that students must be given every opportunity to also show their talents outside the classroom. The Performing Arts allow our students to perform and excel, and are vital to a good all round and successful education.
