Sporting Aims and Provision for Sports

The department offers a wide, balanced curriculum at Key Stage 3. Our aim is to introduce the basic skills and techniques, foster enjoyment in physical activity and improve general levels of fitness. students are assessed regularly by the staff, but they are also encouraged to evaluate their own performance and that of others.

At  Key Stage 4, students are able to opt for a variety of activities and they can choose to pursue these at certificate or GCSE level.

The Physical Education programme is centred entirely at the School, which boasts some excellent facilities. These include two gymnasia, a swimming pool, weight training room and a hall for table tennis. Outside there are floodlit hard court areas for football, softball, netball, tennis and cricket. There is also a 200m running track, long jump pit and grass areas for throwing events.  The department also makes use of local facilities such as Mile End climbing wall and Mile End Stadium for extra curricular activities and sports days.

All students have the opportunity to attend clubs before school, at lunch times and after school. These activities enable them to develop a wider range of physical and social skills. The department also has a number of ‘external’ coaches who come in to school to run lessons and clubs in volleyball, football, cricket and table tennis. There are opportunities for students to participate in a variety of competitive matches - the department enters boys and girls football and cricket leagues; we are also part of the London Sports hall Athletics League.

All of the Physical Education staff are fully qualified and have enjoyed many years of experience between them. Staff regularly attend courses to update their knowledge and gain qualifications in various individual sports.
