A Message from the Headteacher

Important changes to Lunch Arrangements

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I wanted to let you know about some important changes which are being made to lunch arrangements at the School. From Monday 13th October, all students will be provided with a much healthier main meal, which will, of course, include a vegetarian option, a piece of fresh fruit and water. There will no longer be fast foods, snacks or soft drinks available for purchase.

This decision has been taken primarily because we have become increasingly worried about the poor choices which many students have been making at lunch times. I feel that it is important that students are provided with a balanced and nutritious meal during the School day, and believe that this change will help bring that about.

In order to make this system most efficient, there will be no money taken at all at lunch times. For those students who receive free school meals, this requires no change. The School will continue to provide a meal for them. For those students who currently pay, we are asking that parents now pay in advance for a week's meals. Please would those parents ensure that they send a cheque to the School, payable to "St. Paul's Way Community School" for £8 each week. As there will be no facility to take cash in the lunch rooms, it is vital that money is received in advance.

I trust that you will support this important change to improve the diet and the health of your children.

Best wishes,

Simon Harris
Headteacher

Helping to develop policy

The School is currently working to produce an effective anti-bullying policy to ensure the continued safety of all students. A draft document has been produced and we would welcome the input and comments of parents. If you would like to read the draft policy, please contact Mr. Barrett, Deputy Headteacher, and he will arrange for a copy to be sent to you.

Open Evening Reminder

Just a reminder that, because of the need to prepare for the Opening Evening for Year 6 Parents, School will finish early on Wednesday 8th October. Lessons will run as normal in the morning, finishing at 12:35. There will then be a registration period between 12:35 and 12:45, after which lunch will be available for those students who wish to remain for a meal. We anticipate that all students will be off-site by 13:30.

I am sure that you will appreciate that this time is vital to prepare the School for visitors and hope, that if you have a child in Year 6, you will take the time to visit us too.

Work Experience

This year, as always, over 200 Year 11 students have been out on work experience over the last fortnight. The students have spent two weeks working in a variety of placements ranging from the Army to retail. Students will have experienced different work environments and will have developed new skills which will be useful in their later working lives. Work experience runs from Monday 22 September until Friday 3 October. The photo (left) shows St. Paul’s Way student, Quynh Thu Doan of 11W, on work experience at a beauty salon.

Welcome to our new Year 7

On September 3rd St. Paul's Way Community School started the new school year in a very special way. We only had the new Year 7s in School. They had time to familiarise themselves with the school buildings without older pupils there. They met their classmates and their tutor and enjoyed many different activities including a visit to the library, a treasure trail and a taster of a new language (British Sign Language, Portuguese, Afrikaans and Japanese). We were very pleased that a good number of parents dropped in for a cup of tea and coffee.

Lots of teachers have said how quickly Year 7 settled in during the first week. Well done Year 7s! We hope you achieve lots of great things during the next five years.
