A Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I hope that you are well. As I write, summer is upon us and temperatures are beginning to soar. Our building was not well-designed to deal with intense sunshine and many students and staff find the heat inside some classrooms difficult to tolerate. In recognition of this, I have relaxed the uniform requirements for boys, meaning that ties do not need to be worn, and this will remain in force until further notice.

It is vital that students also have access to water. We have increased the supply of mineral water around the School and would ask that you make sure that your child carries a clear, plastic bottle which can be filled up with fresh water. Please remind your child that carbonated drinks will still not be allowed into School and may be confiscated.

The exam season is already upon us with Year 9 students having finished their SATs a week or so ago and Year 11 students set to begin their study leave at the end of this week. GCSE and GNVQ exams begin shortly after that date. I know that staff have worked incredibly hard to prepare students for these important exams, and I am sure that we can continue to rely on your support, to ensure that your child does their very best in the exams. Even at this late stage, time set aside at home for revision and preparation is vital and I hope that you will give your child all the encouragement possible to focus on their studies, so that they achieve all of which they are capable. It is also quite a stressful time for students, and we must all remain mindful of that.

As always, I look forward to welcoming you into the School very soon.

With very best wishes,

Simon Harris
Headteacher

GOING FOR GOLD!

Students and staff from the Deaf Support Base showed their sporting spirit when they participated in the London Deaf Athletics Day at Crystal Palace National Stadium in the first week of term.

A group of thirteen students and six staff joined deaf and hearing impaired young people from schools throughout the capital. Students from St. Paul's Way competed in track and field events including 80m, 100m and 300m races, long jump, high jump, softball throw and javelin. DSB staff helped with the organisation of the events.

Ms Bentham said, "It was a great opportunity for our students to meet other deaf youngsters from all over London and to take part in a major sporting event at a national stadium. We are very proud of all the students for representing the school, showing great team spirit and doing their best. The final results have not yet been posted, but we are expecting some medals!"

Zakirul Islam, 7T, was one of the stars of the day for winning his race and Fahima Patel, 10P, threw 4.7m in the softball event. Sadly, some students had to miss their events due to time constraints, but they made up for this by organising their own 'DSB Massive' race before leaving the stadium to return to school!

Special thanks go to Ms Dew for organising the trip, coaching the students and driving the minibus. A big thank you to DSB staff Cheryl, Denise, Dionne, Mel and Nur for supervising the students and making it a successful trip.

BOOKSHOP TRIP

Portuguese, Turkish, French, Lithuanian - these are just some of the languages you might hear spoken around school. Now you might find these languages in the library too.

On 28th April, fifteen students went on a book buying trip to a specialist foreign language bookshop in the West End called 'Grant and Cutler'. The shop has a great variety of fiction, comic strips, dictionaries, workbooks and even games and DVDs in all sorts of languages. A great selection was chosen for the library and we're looking forward to the books being delivered next week. Remember reading is great in all languages! Come and check out the new books.

Canada is the second largest country in the world. Canada is an Iroquois name for settlement or village. Originally pronounced Kanata, it became anglicised to Canada though the country was not named as such until 1870. Before then, some people wanted the country to be named Canada Borealis, which means north in Latin, as opposed to Australis which means south in Latin.

He has also won a sponsorship deal with Gray Nicolls Cricket Equipment, who sponsor Andrew Strauss (England) and Adam Gilchrist (Australia), so he is in illustrious company. Well done Maruf and good luck this season. Mr Williams
